He's acting weird and aloof all of a sudden. I mean - more so than usual.

I think he's lonely.

Have you talked to him about this idea? Or will it be a surprise?

I sort of....broached it as more of a command than an idea.

But, he knows.

Hey, temp. D'you think the Admiral will listen to you if you ask him to give me my powers back?

[ says the child who has been bothering SO MANY DAMN WARDENS with this request. ]

He might. Meet with me, we can talk about that.

[mycitynow]

Name the time and place, temp. I'll be there.

My cabin is 618. Just about an hour? I'll make us some dinner.

[mycitynow]

[ oh! food! ]

I'll see you then.

[ And soon enough, in an hour, Kyoko's knocking on Sypha's door. ]

[There's a good roast garlic smell when she opens the door - Sypha is deeply enjoying the wide availability of foods aboard the Barge, but sticking to what she knows when cooking herself. Her cabin is a hodgepodge - nearly everything in the bare main room, from the floor to the cabinets to the beams of the ceiling is unfinished wood, with small mullioned windows letting in sunlight. But the kitchen through an arch to one side is very different - its walls and floors are smooth-crafted stone, with smooth wooden countertops and a homey table.]

Oh good, the food has just finished. I am not the best cook, but it just might be bland, not bad.

[mycitynow]

[ Kyoko slips her shoes off, leaving them near the door to the rest of the Barge. She's very blatantly taking a nosy look around, trying to get in all of Sypha's cabin as thoroughly as possible. ]

As long as you didn't mess it up so badly that it poisons me, I'll eat it. I won't turn down food.

[seegodhatesme]

[The main room sure is bare. If there's a bed anywhere in this cabin, it's a mystery. Only the kitchen looks lived in at all, with its big black iron stove taking up half a wall and a scattering of books all over one end of the table. It looks like Sypha's been fully using her library privileges - the shelves are full of books as well.]

Not that bad, no matter what Trevor says. [Said with a quick flash of grin. She dishes up two bowls of soft grains and roast vegetables, and puts one in front of Kyoko.]

I have never had my own kitchen before. It's still a novelty to cook on a stove.

If a stove's a novelty, then what about a microwave? I can show you how that works if you want.

[ Kyoko doesn't eat the grains and veg just yet. Instead, she looks at Sypha, waiting for her to take her food before she eats as well. ]

[Sypha sits not across from her, but on the adjacent side, and gets one bite before she looks up again.]

I have seen them, my first night here. They are fascinating, but they do not cook very well. I found a few books about how they work, but I have a lot of studying to do to understand them. And the English is not the English I know.

[mycitynow]

I don't know English either, [ Kyoko points out, with a laugh. ]

All I can speak is Japanese. Dunno why this place let me learn English, but I'm not complaining—none of you know how to speak Japanese anyway.

[seegodhatesme]

I know English well enough to read it, but the spellings are all changed. Not complaining, it's something new to learn. I would be happy to learn Japanese too, if you want to teach it.

[mycitynow]

I won't go easy on you just cause you're my temp, [ she grins. ] But we'll start with all the stuff little kids know first. It'd be mean to throw you right into the deep end.

[ so that's a 'yes,' she doesn't mind teaching it. ]

[Sypha's enjoying Trevor having been right - she already likes this kid.]

The perfect place to start. But we can do that later. For now, tell me about your powers.

[mycitynow]

[ Kyoko nods. ]

So back home, I'm something called a magical girl. I can use my magic to...I think transform into a different form would be a good way of putting it? I still look like me, but I'm faster, stronger, more durable, and I can summon my weapon. I use that form to fight witches, which are these monsters back home that try to kill regular humans.

[seegodhatesme]

[Sypha smiles, amused.]

I have been called a witch. Is that likely to be a problem?

[mycitynow]

Depends, [ Kyoko shrugs, ] are ya gonna try and kill me and the various humans on board? If so, yeah it'll be a problem. If not, then I suppose I can let you live.

[seegodhatesme]

Probably not. [Her laugh is quiet, mostly to herself.]

So you are a defender. Do you think you know why you are here as an inmate?

[mycitynow]

If the Admiral's anything like the other loser magical girls I have to deal with back home, I think I know why. But if the Admiral's got even a small bit of brains in his head, I dunno.

[ There's a pause before Kyoko asks, ] D'they have survival of the fittest where you're from?

[seegodhatesme]

That depends on what you mean by it.
